GREEN PAVILLION

MISSION

To provide an urban oasis that fosters mental well-being and connection with nature, through a uniquely designed green pavilion that serves as a sanctuary for rest, reflection, and rejuvenation in the heart of the city.

PROBLEM

Urban residents are increasingly affected by stress and disconnection from nature due to the fast-paced, digital nature of city life. The scarcity of peaceful, natural spaces contributes to mental health challenges, leaving few opportunities for rest and reconnection with the natural environment.

SOLUTION

The Green Pavilion provides an urban retreat that blends nature with architecture. This sanctuary within the city serves as a tranquil space for rest and contemplation, fostering mental well-being and a deeper connection with nature for city dwellers.

RESEARCH

I started the research for this project by conducting a Literature Review and looking into Architectural Precedent for inspiration.

  • “How Does Urban Green Space Impact Residents’ Mental Health” (Kaili Chen et al.)

Environmental Benefits: Green spaces contribute to improved air quality and noise reduction, which are direct environmental factors influencing mental health.

Encouraging Physical Activity: Parks and urban forests provide venues for outdoor activities, beneficial for both physical and mental health, especially for children and the elderly.

Social Cohesion and Satisfaction: Green spaces foster social interactions and community cohesion, improving residents' sense of social satisfaction and overall happiness.

Diverse Impact: The positive effects of green spaces vary depending on the type of green space and the socioeconomic background of residents, indicating the need for tailored green space planning.

Urban Planning Implications: Findings emphasize the importance of integrating green spaces in urban planning for mental health benefits and demand-oriented management.

  • Walt Disney Concert Hall

The design of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, created by Frank Gehry, is a standout example of contemporary architecture that integrates artistic vision with functional design. Some exterior aspects to note are:

Organic Inspiration: Gehry's design is heavily influenced by natural forms. The building's silhouette mimics the flow and curves of organic shapes, resembling flower petals or billowing sails. This gives the structure a sense of movement and fluidity, making it a dynamic addition to the urban landscape.

Sculptural Form: The concert hall is not just a building but a sculptural piece of art. Its form challenges traditional architectural norms, featuring undulating curves and no right angles, which makes it visually captivating and unique.

Reflective Surfaces: The stainless steel exterior panels are a key element of the design. They capture and reflect the California light, creating a lively interplay of light and shadow that changes throughout the day and with the seasons.

Architect: Frank Gehry

Built: 1999-2003

Type: Concert Hall

Location: 111 South Grand Avenue Los Angeles, California, U.S.

FINAL MODEL

The final model illustrates the subtle curvature of the walls, seamlessly integrating the visitors with the natural ambiance of the space.

Recognizing that the busier we get, the more we need such spaces, the pavilion is not just a structure but a reminder of the need for self-care and mental well-being in urban life.

the accessible green space

  • Sustainable Urban Planning Model: The project highlights the importance of sustainable urban planning, where green spaces are not just add-ons but essential components of city landscapes. By blending architecture with greenery, the pavilion serves as a model for future urban developments, prioritizing environmental health alongside human well-being.

Impactful Community Spaces: The pavilion illustrates how well-designed community spaces can enhance social cohesion and satisfaction, creating a natural gathering place that strengthens the urban social fabric.

Adaptive Use of Urban Spaces: By creating a green sanctuary within the city, the pavilion offers a unique solution to the urban disconnect from nature, demonstrating how architecture can enhance mental well-being and provide a tranquil retreat amidst the hustle of city life.

DESIGN PROCESS

After conducting the research process, I ideated the design of my pavilion to help me create the physical 3D model in the end.

  • 休 Rest (휴) =人 Human (인) +木 Tree (목)

The design of the pavilion, '휴(休),' is deeply rooted in the harmonious blend of humanity and nature. In Korean, '휴(休)' signifies rest, represented by the symbols for 'human' (人) and 'tree' (木). This concept reflects the idea of a person finding peace and tranquility by leaning against a tree, symbolizing a return to nature for inner balance.

  • The architecture blends seamlessly with greenery, creating an environment where city dwellers can connect with nature. The space is intentionally designed to contrast the urban landscape, offering a peaceful haven within the city.

The pavilion's structure, designed to resemble a person leaning against a tree, embodies this symbiosis. It signifies the dependence of humans on nature for mental and emotional rejuvenation.
